The University of Memphis is an American public research university located in the Normal Station neighborhood of Memphis, which is the county seat of Shelby County, situated in the southwest corner of the U.S. state of Tennessee, with a population estimated at a number of more than 670 000 inhabitants, fact which makes it the largest city in the state, the third largest in the Southeastern United States, and the 19th largest in the United States.
The university was established in September, 1912, being founded under the auspices of the General Education Bill, enacted by the Tennessee General Assembly in 1909, first starting under the name of West Tennessee State Normal School, which became Memphis State College, in 1941, adopting its current name in 1957, 2 years later, admitting its first black students.
Today, UM, as the university if often abbreviated, is one of Tennessee's three comprehensive doctoral-extensive institutions of higher learning, awarding more than 3,000 degrees annually. It has an enrollment of more than 21,000 students, offering numerous educational programs through 10 colleges and schools, which include: College of Arts and Sciences, Fogelman College of Business and Economics, Herff College of Engineering and the Graduate School. In 2010, U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of Memphis as a Tier 4 university in its Best Colleges 2010 annual rankings.
The university's athletic teams are known as the Memphis Tigers, who compete in NCAA Division I, in 9 women's and 9 men's sports, being, perhaps, best known for their achievements in basketball, in which the Tigers first gained national prominence when they reached the 1973 NCAA Division I basketball championship game, also reaching the Elite Eight three years in a row (2006-2008), in the same years winning the conference championship, going undefeated in conference play in 2007 and 2008.
Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: W.W. Herenton - Former Mayor, City of Memphis, Martin Belz - President of Belz Enterprises, Nancy Laurie - Billionaire Investor in Wal-Mart, Kenneth May - CEO of FedEx Kinko's, J. Kenneth Hazen - President and CEO of CTSI, Clare Grant - actress, William Sanderson - actor, and Stan Franklin - cognitive scientist, among many others.
